James Berry Vineyard
One of the greatest and most iconic sites in Central California is James Berry Vineyard. Planted by hand by the Smith family in the early 80's and currently farmed by the viticultural wizard Justin Smith of Saxum vineyards. This vineyard epitomizes everything that is special about Paso Robles. The calcareous nature of the high lime fractured shale here is perfect for grapevines. All farming is done organically and by hand with the utmost attention to detail. Being only twelve miles from the coast provides afternoon winds that cool temperatures and allow the fruit to ripen physiologically while maintaining incredible acidity. The long harvest season allows to pick at the optimal moment providing the perfect ripeness. The vineyard is primarily Rhone varietals with many of the clones coming from John Alban, a legend in his own right. James Berry Vineyard is Saxum’s estate vineyard producing multiple 100 point wines and too many accolades to mention. We are honored to offer our Maturin wine comprised of Graciano, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Grenache from this hallowed ground.
